Divorce is full of decisions that must be discussed and agreed upon by both spouses. Sometimes one spouse may have a request that is unusual or surprising to the other spouse. This is exactly what happened to one man recently, who asked for custody of his children on an unusual day that is not a holiday. This story illustrates that Lansing child custody arrangements aren’t always as cut and dry as swapping years for major holidays.
It had been decided that the mother would have custody of their two children for her desired Jewish holidays and part of their Christmas vacation from school. The father would have them for his part of Christmas, Easter and St. Patrick’s Day. Being an avid sports enthusiast, the two had agreed that the father would have them for Super Bowl Sunday. He felt however that the arrangement was unbalanced, partly because he did not desire as many religious holidays.
So, this father took his ex-wife and her representation by surprise by asking for an unusual day that was as special to him as any holiday. The father requested to have custody of their two children on whatever day the NCAA men’s basketball title game is played if Syracuse, his favorite team, is playing. Syracuse sports are an extreme passion for this father, and he desires to share it with his children much in the same way that people share holidays.
This story illustrates how different people are and how their passions and desires affect their wishes in divorce. For many, a sporting event may not be considered a day to rival holidays. However, in child custody discussions, it is typically worthwhile to consider the wishes of both parents, conventional or not. Lansing parents going through a divorce may find this story as a reassurance that even unusual wishes can be met. The key to any decision in divorce is having the right support, open communication, and a willingness to work together.
