DAD RETURNS HOME TO FACE NON-PAYMENT OF CHILD SUPPORT CHARGES

When a Michigan couple decides to divorce, several factors are taken into consideration, particularly if children are involved. The courts can order one spouse to pay child support. However, sometimes a spouse may feel that the court’s order, for whatever reason, is unjust and makes a decision not to pay. Without gaining a court-approved modification in support, though, that decision will only make legal matters worse.

In recent news, an infamous father who owes more than $1 million in back child support was taken into custody. The father has allegedly failed to make the payments that he is required to pay to support three children from two marriages. It’s reported that the father had been living in Thailand.

Allegedly, the dad was detained when he attempted to enter the Philippines. However, further details are sketchy as to what caused authorities to zero in on him. The representing attorney for the father says that his client welcomes the chance to address the allegations against him. The 50-year-old dad made the government’s ‘most wanted deadbeat parent’ list when he purportedly failed, for more than 10 years, to pay child support to his three kids.

Non-custodial parents in Michigan who experience a significant change in life circumstances may wish to pursue a modification in the amount of child support payments they are required to make. Unless a court approves such a change, however, they must continue paying the original ordered amount. Alternatively, custodial parents who feel that a non-custodial parent are not appropriately meeting their child support obligations may wish to research their options for enforcement of a child support order that has previously been handed down by a family law judge.
