Social networking has been touted as necessary to a myriad of activities in modern life, including to achieve business success, to remain ‘in the loop’ among the in crowd and to find a job, along with engaging optimally in dozens of other work and leisure activities. But a new report is out that finds a danger in social media, particularly Facebook. Too much Facebook, whether you live in Michigan or somewhere else, could be hazardous to your health, uh well, at least hazardous to your marital health. The report concludes that excessive users of Facebook are more prone to get involved in cheating and ultimately to land up in divorce court.
The study is scheduled to be published in the Journal of Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking. It found that people who are checking Facebook many times each day are considered to be excessive users. Apparently, the casual and warm social setting for communicating can lead to liaisons that are a threat to marital peace and security.
The study indicates that cheating includes not only physical contact but emotional cheating as well. Researchers affiliated with at least three universities in the United States concluded that Facebook-related jealousy can arise and can rip the couple apart when arguments follow. This direct correlation was found to be stronger with respect to more recent relationships.
To support the security of your current relationship, the researchers recommend that you limit your Facebook use to a moderate level. A more limited usage will be more nourishing to newer relationships where people are still getting to know each other. Amazingly, in a survey in 2012, divorce lawyers reported Facebook playing some role in about a third of their divorces.
Regardless of the Facebook factor, divorce proceedings continue to increase at their usual brisk pace. If you face a divorce in Michigan, it will make your task easier by consulting with divorce counsel to preliminarily determine all of the facts, issues and questions to be resolved. With a good arsenal of information at your disposal, you’ll likely find the road to dissolution of marriage can be easier to travel.
