HELPING THE CHILDREN SURVIVE A MICHIGAN DIVORCE

Latest Articles

When a Michigan couple decides its marriage is no longer working, it is often done without consulting the children. This is typically the right decision when preparing for divorce proceedings. However, that does not mean that the children will necessarily be as satisfied with the choice as their parents want them to be.

The children usually know it when the parents are no longer in love and, in some cases, barely speaking to one another. However, putting the kids in the middle and allowing them to hear arguments and complaints about the parents does not help the children through the process. Regardless of what is going on between the adults, they are still parents.

Many children only want to know that they are still a priority for both parents. This often translates into the parents putting aside their disputes with one another and refocusing on the needs of the children. During the process of getting divorced, the parents can lay the foundation for a post-divorce relationship with the children and with each other.

That relationship can be one where both parents attend birthdays, sporting events and other important milestones in their children’s lives. Further, creating a comprehensive child custody agreement can help eliminate future confrontations that could interfere with the joy of watching the children grow. A Michigan divorce does not have to destroy the parental relationship. In fact, it can be strengthened when each party allows him- or herself the opportunity to embrace the joys of parenting — even if it is from separate households.
