Michigan residents have no doubt heard the voice of popular singer Usher Raymond, but many may be surprised to hear of his tearful day in child custody court recently.
Usher, as he is simply known, has been involved in a dramatic child custody battle with his ex-wife Tameka Foster. According to reports, the battle began in 2009 with the couple’s divorce and has been raging ever since. In the most recent court contest, Foster and her attorneys pressed Usher to answer unflattering questions and insinuated that he is an unfit parent, allegations which brought the singer to tears on the witness stand.
Usher is demanding more custodial time with his two young boys in the face of Foster’s fight for full custody. Foster and her attorneys have leveled accusations of partying, drug use, and more against the artist. Usher has made accusations of his own toward Foster, claiming she tried to beat up his girlfriend who was present in his vehicle when he was in Foster’s neighborhood. Foster allegedly threw food at his car, struck him and spat on his companion.
It is not uncommon for couples, divorcing or divorced, to find themselves in the midst of a stressful child custody battle. Many Michigan fathers may relate to the circumstances Usher finds himself in as he tries to establish his independence after divorce while dealing with his ex-wife in the child custody process. At the same time, many women who are afraid of being left destitute, or who feel rejected by their spouse, may identify with Foster in this case.
No child custody battle is easy, as parents attempt to find a workable balance. Child custody should always be about what is best for the children involved and should strive to limit the heartache and bitterness.
