At the behest of the U.S. Attorney’s Office located in Grand Rapids, the U.S. Office of the Inspector General (OIG) unsealed a decades old indictment relating to a Michigan man. The father of four reportedly owes close to $560,000 in back child support. The government has reportedly been looking for him since 1997.
The Michigan father and his now ex-wife were divorced in 1989. At that time, he was ordered to pay child support of $100 per month. He later went back to court to have the amount reduced. He convinced the court that he was disabled and not working, and his support obligation was lowered to $14 per month.
In 1996, it was discovered that the man owned and operated an online business. Ultimately, he sold the business for a reported $2 million. At that time, a modified order was entered, increasing his child support obligation to take the income from this business and its sale into account. After that, he failed to make his child support payments and disappeared. He is still at large.
Without the benefit of receiving child support, the mother of this man’s four children most likely had an uphill battle caring and providing for the children. Even though the children may no longer be minors, she may want to see her ex-husband brought to justice. Many single parents can empathize with this woman’s situation. When a noncustodial parent fails to provide financially for his or her children, the custodial parent can go back to the court for assistance in collecting unpaid support.
