MICHIGAN PARENTS, WEALTHY OR NOT, CAN FACE CHILD SUPPORT HARDSHIP

In today’s economy, Michigan parents from all walks of life, careers and levels of education have been affected by decreasing finances. One recent news report suggests that perhaps even famous NFL stars have fallen victim to the challenges of today’s economy. Bob Whitfield, known for his NFL career, has recently been in the media spotlight over an alleged failure to pay a significant amount of child support.

Whitfield has apparently admitted that he failed to meet the payment obligations by as many as 38 months. The delinquency of more than $2,100 per month totals more than $80,000. Whitfield’s wife, Sheree, is also a well-known figure, as she stars in reality television. He has reportedly been ordered to pay $75,000 to Sheree for owed child support.

Whitfield reportedly signed a contract with the Atlanta Falcons in 2000 worth a reported $30 million. Nevertheless, Whitfield has stated that his failure to make the child support payments was due to his inability to do so. The circumstances surrounding this inability have not been disclosed, but he is far from the first sports star to have financial difficulties. Given the continuing stagnant economy, it may not be difficult for Michigan readers to sympathize with having a dire financial situation and being unsure of how to best handle the matter.

When it comes to child support, if a parent becomes unable to pay, it is best to seek the relief from the appropriate court. In many cases, a court will modify an existing child support order based upon a showing of a substantial change in financial circumstances. For many parents unfortunately who do not take the right steps to work through their difficult time, they may find themselves ordered to pay significant sums of money. Some even face criminal charges in child support cases if it is documented that any failure to pay was willful.
